Shanmugam C Ve

C. Ve. Shanmugam, 61, is a senior AIADMK leader and current Rajya Sabha MP from Tamil Nadu, representing a political lineage as the son of former MP C. Venugopal. A law graduate who previously practiced as an advocate, Shanmugam has had a significant political career spanning over two decades, serving four terms as MLA and holding multiple ministerial portfolios including Education, Law, Commercial Taxes, Mines, and Prisons under Chief Ministers J. Jayalalithaa and Edappadi K. Palaniswami. He served as AIADMK district secretary for Villupuram for over a decade and was elected MP to Rajya Sabha on June 30, 2022. However, Shanmugam's recent years have been marked by significant controversies and setbacks. He lost the 2021 Villupuram assembly election to R. Lakshmanan, prompting his strategic shift to the Mailam constituency for the 2026 elections. In 2025, the Supreme Court imposed a ₹10 lakh fine on him for filing what was described as an 'abuse of the process of law' petition attempting to discredit the Election Commission, in a case challenging the DMK government's use of Chief Minister Stalin's name in welfare schemes. He was also arrested in April 2022 for protesting against subsidy scheme cancellations. Most damagingly, he faced widespread public condemnation and social media outrage for making inappropriate remarks about actress Nayanthara during a protest, which were criticized as misogynistic and vulgar. Shanmugam has declared assets worth ₹4.82 crores with liabilities of ₹20 lakhs, and faces 3 criminal cases including serious charges related to bribery (§171E), illegal election payments (§171H), and defamation. He is now contesting from Mailam constituency where he faces DMDK's L. Venkatesan in what is characterized as an election with intense caste dynamics, with Shanmugam's Vanniyar identity being a key factor. His strategy involves using MP funds for local development projects to strengthen his political base.
