R. Balaji (also known as Ragu Balaji) is a 44-year-old lawyer and social worker contesting from Madurai West on a DMK ticket. He is a new entrant to electoral politics for the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, taking on three-term incumbent Sellur K. Raju from AIADMK. The constituency, with approximately 2.7 lakh voters, has been an AIADMK stronghold for three consecutive terms, though victory margins have narrowed significantly from 38,700 votes in 2011 to just 9,121 votes in 2021, indicating a tightening electoral contest. The constituency has historically elected leaders from various parties including CPI, MGR's AIADMK, and DMK's PT. R. Palanivel Rajan, but the last three elections have consistently favored AIADMK.
