P. Thangamani, 65, is a senior AIADMK leader and four-time MLA representing Kumarapalayam constituency in Tamil Nadu. His political career spans nearly two decades, having first entered the assembly from Tiruchengode in 2006 before shifting to Kumarapalayam in 2011. He has held important ministerial portfolios including Industry (2011-16) and Power (till May 2021), marking him as a trusted figure within the AIADMK establishment. Thangamani's electoral record demonstrates consistent voter support in Kumarapalayam. In 2016, he won decisively with 1,03,032 votes against DMK's 55,703, and in 2021, he secured 100,800 votes against DMK's 69,154. However, his tenure as Power Minister remains controversial due to his signing of the UDAY agreement in 2017, which led to power tariff hikes exceeding 10%.
