Kullampalayam Arthanari Sengottaiyan, 78, is one of Tamil Nadu's most enduring political figures with a career spanning five decades. Born on 9 January 1948 in Kullampalayam, Erode District, he joined the AIADMK in 1972 and rose through party ranks to become a nine-term MLA — a rare achievement in Tamil Nadu politics. He first won from Sathyamangalam in 1977 by a narrow margin of 1,506 votes against INC's C.R. Rajappa, then dominated Gobichettipalayam constituency for eight consecutive terms (1980, 1984, 1989, 1991, 2006, 2011, 2016, 2021), losing only once in 1996. His 2021 victory with 51% vote share (margin of 28,563 votes) demonstrated his continued electoral strength even at 73. Sengottaiyan's ministerial career includes significant portfolios: Transport Minister (1991-1996), Agriculture Minister (May-Nov 2011), Information Technology Minister (Nov 2011-Jan 2012), Revenue Minister (Jan-July 2012), and School Education Minister (May 2017-May 2021). He also served as Leader of the House (Feb 2017-Jan 2018) and was AIADMK Headquarters Secretary (2006-2012). However, his tenure has been marred by serious controversies. In 2000, a CBI court convicted him for criminal conspiracy and criminal breach of trust involving misappropriation of transport department funds during his time as Transport Minister, sentencing him to 4-5 years rigorous imprisonment and fining him ₹1.05 lakh. This disqualified him from contesting the 2001 elections, though he was acquitted by the Madras High Court in 2005, with the Supreme Court declining to interfere in 2006. His political journey took a dramatic turn in 2025. After 53 years with AIADMK, he was expelled in October 2025 for allegedly aligning with expelled leaders O. Panneerselvam and V.K. Sasikala. Within weeks, he joined actor-politician Vijay's newly formed Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) in November 2025, becoming Chief Coordinator of its High-Level Administrative Committee. He is now contesting the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections from Gobichettipalayam on a TVK ticket, promising to make the constituency a separate district if Vijay comes to power. Beyond corruption charges, he allegedly assaulted DMK leader Karunanidhi in the Assembly in 1989 and controversially claimed in 1992 that the Vachathi case violence (where police brutalized villagers) was fabricated, allegedly attempting to disrupt identification parades. Voters face a complex choice: a politician with deep constituency roots, extensive administrative experience across multiple ministries, and proven electoral appeal, but also carrying the baggage of corruption convictions (though later overturned), alleged violence, and questionable stances on human rights issues.
