Thamizh, 35, is contesting from the Chidambaram constituency in Tamil Nadu's 2026 Legislative Assembly elections as a Naam Tamilar Katchi (NTK) candidate. A post-graduate who identifies his profession as farming, Thamizh represents a party that has been positioning itself as a Tamil nationalist alternative to the state's traditional Dravidian political parties. His candidacy comes at a time when NTK, revived by actor-turned-politician Seeman in 2010, has gained recognition as a state party by the Election Commission of India and has been building support particularly among youth voters seeking change from established political formations. However, Thamizh's candidacy carries significant concerns that voters must carefully consider. His affidavit reveals two serious criminal cases with grave charges including attempt to murder (IPC 307), rioting armed with deadly weapons (IPC 148), voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapons (IPC 324), along with charges of rioting, wrongful restraint, and voluntarily causing hurt. These are not minor offenses but serious violent crimes that raise questions about temperament and conduct. Additionally, his declared assets of Rs. 8.01 lakhs (entirely movable, with zero immovable property) appear questionable for someone claiming to be a farmer, as he owns no agricultural land. Thamizh's party, NTK, has outlined ambitious development plans in its 462-page manifesto, including proposals to create five capital cities across Tamil Nadu, declare farming a national occupation, abolish EVMs, implement mandatory voting, and impose a complete ban on alcohol. The manifesto also promises a 'Medical Tourism City' integrating Allopathy with Siddha and Ayurveda, and dedicated healthcare facilities for transgender communities. However, the party has also been embroiled in controversies, including protests against films deemed offensive to Tamil sentiments that led to theater attacks and arrests of party workers, and its leader Seeman has faced criticism for controversial remarks about the Arundhathiyar community. Voters in Chidambaram should weigh Thamizh's representation of a party offering an alternative political vision against serious concerns about his criminal record involving violent offenses and questions about his financial disclosures. This is his first known electoral contest, and no previous election data is available for comparison. The combination of serious pending criminal charges and unusual asset declarations merit careful scrutiny before casting a ballot.
