K.K.S.S.R. Ramachandran, popularly known as 'Sattur Ramachandran,' is a 76-year-old veteran politician with over four decades of political experience and nine successful Assembly election victories. Despite being educated only until 8th standard, he has risen to become Tamil Nadu's Minister for Revenue and Disaster Management, a critical portfolio overseeing land revenue administration and disaster response. His political journey is marked by remarkable flexibility—he started with AIADMK, won three consecutive elections from Sattur (1977, 1980, 1984), briefly formed his own party Anna Puratchi Thalaivar Munnetra Kazhagam in 1989, and finally switched to DMK in the late 1990s where he has remained since. His electoral record in Aruppukottai shows growing dominance: after losing in 2011, he recaptured the seat in 2016 with a 10.95% margin and consolidated his position in 2021 with a commanding 22.80% margin (39,034 votes) over AIADMK's Vaigaichelvan. He previously served as Minister for Health and Backward Classes between 2006 and 2011, a tenure that would later become controversial. However, his career is severely clouded by a disproportionate assets case filed by the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (DVAC) in 2011, alleging that he and his family acquired assets disproportionate to known income sources during his 2006-2011 ministerial tenure. The case was controversially discharged by a Special Court in 2021 after DMK came to power, but the Madras High Court revived it in August 2024, sharply criticizing DVAC for colluding to bury the case and ordering daily trial. He was directed to appear before the Special Court in September 2024. Voters should know that while Ramachandran brings extensive administrative experience and strong local support to his current ministerial role, the revived disproportionate assets case raises serious questions about financial integrity during his previous ministerial stint. His affidavit declares assets worth ₹4.18 crores and liabilities of ₹73.6 lakhs, but the ongoing legal proceedings suggest the complete financial picture may be more complex. With only one criminal case (IPC 109 - abetment) declared in his affidavit while facing a serious assets case, voters must weigh his political experience against concerns about transparency and accountability.
