S. Semmalai, 51, is a veteran politician with over four decades of electoral experience in Tamil Nadu, though his current candidacy raises several questions. He first entered politics in 1980, winning as an Independent from Taramangalam constituency by defeating the Congress nominee with a margin of 22,383 votes during the MGR wave. He later joined the Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) and went on to win from Taramangalam again in 1984, Omalur in 2001, and Mettur in 2016. He also served as Member of Parliament from Salem Lok Sabha constituency from 2009 to 2014 and held the prestigious position of Acting Speaker of the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly in 2016. However, his current candidacy presents significant inconsistencies. He is contesting from Ariyalur as an Independent candidate despite being the current AIADMK MLA from Mettur constituency—a seat he has never contested before. Semmalai's political career demonstrates electoral resilience—he has been elected four times to the state assembly and once to Parliament. However, the absence of any campaign visibility, social media presence, or public statements regarding his Ariyalur candidacy is notable. Ariyalur has been represented by DMK's K. Chinnappa since 2021 and AIADMK's S. Rajendran from 2016-2021.
