J.L.Eswarappan

J. L. Eswarappan is a 47-year-old DMK politician who has represented the Arcot constituency in Tamil Nadu's Legislative Assembly since 2016. A graduate professional involved in business and parliamentary work, Eswarappan began his political journey as Arcot municipality chairman in 2006 and has since risen through DMK ranks to become the party's Youth Wing district secretary. His electoral trajectory shows steady improvement: in 2016, he defeated AIADMK's K. V. Ramadoss by 11,091 votes with 41.39% vote share, and strengthened his position in 2021 by winning with 50.06% votes, defeating PMK's K. L. Elavazagan by a margin of 19,958 votes. Financially, Eswarappan declared assets of Rs. 11.32 crore in the current election, down from Rs. 13.18 crore in 2021—a 14% decrease. More significantly, his liabilities dropped from Rs. 7.12 crore to Rs. 1.25 crore, an 82% reduction, raising questions about how such substantial debt was cleared while overall assets also declined. While Eswarappan himself appears to maintain a clean profile, he operates within a broader DMK government that has faced multiple corruption allegations. The party has been embroiled in controversies including an alleged Rs. 888-crore cash-for-jobs scam in the Municipal Administration and Water Supply Department and a Rs. 1000-crore TASMAC liquor corporation scandal under ED investigation. However, no evidence connects Eswarappan to these scandals. His limited individual visibility beyond party structures and absence of documented major development projects suggest a constituency-level operator rather than a state-level political heavyweight. Voters in Arcot should know that Eswarappan represents electoral consistency and party loyalty within the DMK framework, with improving vote shares suggesting growing local acceptance. However, the lack of publicly documented development initiatives and the unusual financial trajectory—particularly the simultaneous decrease in assets and dramatic debt reduction—merit scrutiny.
