Sholinghur constituency in Tamil Nadu has experienced mixed development outcomes from 2021 to 2026 under sitting MLA A.M. Munirathinam of the Indian National Congress. While the region benefited from state and central government initiatives—including construction of over 3.30 lakh rural houses under PM Housing Scheme, drinking water supply to 7.15 lakh households through Jal Jeevan Mission, and major industrial investments like the Tata Motors plant in nearby Ranipet worth ₹9,000 crore creating employment opportunities—the constituency has faced persistent civic challenges. Significant infrastructure projects included road developments under PMGSY and construction of over 2.43 lakh toilets under Swachh Bharat Mission since 2021-22. However, local governance issues have created public frustration. Chronic flooding during monsoons, absence of an underground drainage system, and discharge of sewage into irrigation channels sparked major protests in August 2024 when residents blocked the Sholinghur-Paravathur Main Road. Drinking water scarcity remains a persistent problem, forcing many households to rely on expensive private tankers. Poor waste management, inadequate road conditions in interior villages, and limited healthcare and educational facilities continue to be major grievances. The municipality's storm water drain widening project has failed to adequately address root causes of flooding. The constituency also witnessed broader challenges affecting Tamil Nadu, including the devastating COVID-19 pandemic (with Tamil Nadu reporting over 45 million cases statewide), and natural disasters like Cyclone Ditwah in 2025. Regional issues included the 2024 Kallakurichi alcohol poisoning tragedy near Sholinghur that killed 65 people and custodial deaths highlighting police accountability concerns. As the 2026 Assembly elections approach on April 23, voters face a choice between incumbent Munirathinam (INC), K. Saravanan (PMK), Ashok Kumar (NTK), and G. Kapil (TVK). Voters should weigh the broader state-level development achievements against persistent local civic infrastructure failures and unfulfilled basic service delivery promises in areas like drainage, water supply, and waste management.
