Orathanadu constituency in Thanjavur district witnessed significant political turbulence and development activity from 2021 to 2026. R. Vaithilingam of AIADMK won the 2021 assembly elections with 90,063 votes (46.95%), defeating DMK's M. Ramachandran by a margin of 28,835 votes. During this period, the constituency benefited from multiple state and central government schemes including the Jal Jeevan Mission (providing tap water connections to over 7.15 lakh rural households across Tamil Nadu at ₹2,123 crore), Swachh Bharat Mission (constructing over 2.43 lakh toilets in rural Tamil Nadu), road improvements under the State Roads Improvement Project, rural electrification through DDUGJY, and housing schemes under PMAY with ₹500 crore allocated for 177 affordable housing projects. Educational initiatives like Mission Iyarkai (launched 2022) and employment schemes like Naan Mudhalvan and MGNREGA were also implemented. However, the period was marred by serious controversies surrounding the sitting MLA. Vaithilingam faced corruption allegations including a bribery case involving Rs 27.9 crore related to a real estate project, and Tamil Nadu police registered a Rs 32.47 crore disproportionate assets case against him for assets allegedly acquired during his tenure as Housing Minister (2011-2016). The ED conducted money laundering raids in October 2024. Politically, Vaithilingam was expelled from AIADMK in June 2022 for 'anti-party activities' along with O. Panneerselvam, and later joined the DMK in January 2026, creating a dramatic political shift in the constituency. Voters should weigh the developmental benefits received through state-wide schemes against the serious corruption allegations facing their representative, while considering the political instability created by party-switching. The 2026 elections scheduled for April 23, 2026, will see Vaithilingam contesting on a DMK ticket against candidates from AMMK, NTK, and TVK.
